Macular Degeneration

Understanding Macular Degeneration

Age-related macular degeneration, or AMD, is the leading cause of vision loss in people over 50 in the developed world. At Unia Opticians, we provide comprehensive screening, monitoring, and support for patients with this condition. AMD affects the macula, the central part of your retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision needed for activities like reading, recognising faces, and driving.

The condition typically develops gradually and affects central vision whilst peripheral vision remains intact. Early detection and appropriate management are crucial for preserving your sight and maintaining your independence.

Types and Symptoms

There are two forms of AMD: dry and wet. Dry AMD is more common and progresses slowly as the macular cells gradually deteriorate. Wet AMD is less common but more serious, occurring when abnormal blood vessels grow under the retina and leak fluid or blood.

Early symptoms might include slightly blurred central vision, difficulty reading, or needing brighter light for close work. As the condition progresses, you might notice distortion where straight lines appear wavy, dark or empty patches in your central vision, or colours appearing less vivid. Some people don’t notice symptoms until the condition is quite advanced.

Advanced Diagnostic Assessment

We use cutting-edge technology including OCT scanning and digital retinal imaging to detect and monitor macular degeneration with exceptional precision. OCT allows us to see detailed cross-sections of your macula, identifying early changes before they affect your vision.

This technology is invaluable for distinguishing between dry and wet AMD, monitoring progression, and detecting the conversion from dry to wet AMD, which requires urgent treatment. Regular monitoring appointments allow us to track even subtle changes and intervene promptly when necessary.

Treatment and Support

Whilst there’s currently no cure for dry AMD, certain nutritional supplements containing vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants can slow its progression in some patients. We’ll advise you on appropriate supplements and lifestyle modifications including stopping smoking, eating a healthy diet rich in leafy greens and fish, and protecting your eyes from UV light.

If you develop wet AMD, prompt referral for hospital treatment with anti-VEGF injections can prevent further vision loss and sometimes even improve vision. We work closely with hospital eye services to ensure you receive timely, coordinated care.

Living Well with AMD

An AMD diagnosis can feel overwhelming, but many people continue to live active, independent lives with the condition. We’ll support you with regular monitoring, practical advice on maximising your remaining vision, and referrals to low vision services if needed.

We can also provide information about aids and adaptations that help with daily activities. If you notice sudden changes in your vision, particularly distortion or dark patches, contact us immediately as this could indicate wet AMD requiring urgent treatment.
