Contact Lenses Dos & Donโts
Here are some useful tips on contact lens wear and care to help you get the best out of your contact lenses.
DOs
- DO have regular check-ups as advised by your practitioner
- DO always wash and dry your hands thoroughly prior to handling your lenses
- DO always rub, rinse and store your lenses in the recommended solution before and after each use (except single-use lenses, which should be discarded after each wear)
- DO always clean the lens case with solution, wipe with a clean tissue then air-dry after each use by placing the case and lids face down on a tissue
- DO always apply the same lens first to avoid mixing them up
- DO check the lens is not inside out before applying
- DO check the lens is not damaged before applying
- DO handle carefully to avoid damaging the lens
- DO apply your lenses before putting on make-up
- DO remove lenses then remove make-up
- DO keep your eyes closed when using hairspray or other aerosols
- DO replace your lens case at least monthly
- DO discard lenses and solutions that are past their expiry date
- DO keep all bottles of solutions closed when not in use
- DO wear only the lenses specified by your practitioner
- DO stick strictly to the recommended wearing schedule and replacement frequency
- DO make sure you have an adequate supply of replacement lenses or a spare pair
- DO have an up-to-date pair of spectacles for when you need to remove your lenses
- DO have regular aftercare appointments and eye examinations as advised by your practitioner
Ask yourself these three questions, each time you wear your lenses:
Do my eyes feel good with my lenses? โ no discomfortโจ
Do my eyes look good? โ no rednessโจ
Do I see well? โ no unusual blurring with either eye
If the answer to any of these questions is no, leave your lenses off and consult your contact lens practitioner immediately, who will advise you on what to do next.
DONโT
- DONโT use tap water, or any other water, on your lenses or lens case
- DONโT wet your lenses with saliva
- DONโT use anything other than recommended solutions for lubricating, rewetting &/or cleaning your lenses.
- DONโT put a lens on the eye if it falls on the floor or other surface, without cleaning and storing again
- DONโT apply a lens if it is dirty, dusty or damaged
- DONโT use finger nails, tweezers or other tools to remove lenses from their packaging or containers
- DONโT wear your lenses for longer than the recommended wearing schedule as advised by your practitioner
- DONโT continue to wear your lenses if your eyes donโt feel good, look good, or see well
- DONโT re-use or top up solution โ always discard all of the old solution in the case and replace it with fresh solution each time lenses are stored
- DONโT decant solution into smaller containers
- DONโT wear lenses left in the case for more than seven days without cleaning and storing them in fresh solution
- DONโT sleep in your lenses unless specifically advised to by your practitioner
- DONโT wear any lens overnight if you are unwell
- DONโT wear any contact lenses that have not been prescribed by your practitioner
- DONโT allow your lenses or your contact lens case to come in to contact with water
- DONโT swim, use hot tubs or carry out water sports in lenses
- DONโT wear your lenses when showering
- DONโT switch the solution you use except on the advice of your practitioner
- DONโT use any eye drops without advice from your contact lens practitioner
- DONโT share contact lenses
